The rape victim was white, and the rapist was black. The bystanders were driving by, and it wasn't clear what they were witnessing. Had the sex been consensual, any bystander who intervened would have been called racist.
Regardless of whether or not of what was happening was "clear" to the people driving by, a scuffle between two people still looks suspicious. In my opinion, race isn't the issue here; even if a white person and a black person were consensually having sex, they would still have been doing it on the STREET, which would still call for action from bystanders. The issue is the fact that people saw something suspicious going on and no one did anything to stop it.
