"It's not rape if you yell surprise."
Ever heard this phrase? I have. Back in high school, I had classmates who would chant it as a joke. Today during a discussion, this phrase came up, and when I came home, I decided to Google the phrase and see just how far its scope reached. What I found, shocked me.
The first result was a link to Uncyclopedia, which seems to be some sort of parody of Wikipedia. The Uncyclopedia article was entitled "Rape," and it is probably one of the most disgusting things I have ever read. Documented below are just a few offensive portions of this article - however, it does not even begin to encompass the disturbing nature of this page:
A section entitled "How to commit rape," complete with a five-step process.
A section entitled "Asking for it."
A section entitled "What To Do if You Have Been Raped," with this quote: "Most importantly, DO NOT inform the police for at least two weeks. Taking a short time to come to terms with your trauma and well-deserved sense of shame and self-disgust will help them to dismiss your case. Coming forward immediately may make them believe the kind of cock and bull story sluts like you are always coming up with, and could land your rapist in trouble."
Listed below is the link to the actual page: read at your own risk.
In a nutshell, I am positively disgusted. I don't care if this was intended as a joke. I sure as hell am not laughing. This page is, for starters, victim blaming, homophobic, sexist, racist, and in completely bad taste. By reducing the act of rape to a joke, this page is not only contributing dangerously to our current rape culture, but making an already severe problem worse. Has anyone considered that some people may be reading this page and taking it literally? There is a five-step process TO RAPE SOMEONE on this page! It is NEVER okay to mock, degrade, objectify, or encourage rape. NEVER.
Reactions?

Completely agree with your title... disgusting
ReplyDeleteSo rape is sacred or something? lol
ReplyDeleteUncyclopedia is a joke site that tries to look official. Part of the comedy in the site is the content is so outlandish that you cant believe how real it looks. Almost like Wikipedia! What is worse is sites of with people who can't look at a site that is so outlandish and take it seriously. I agree that rape is no laughing matter and his a horrible crime that should be punished harshly but the truth is people will make fun of it to deal with the real world ramifications of it just like any other topic people find taboo, distasteful, or scary. Just as you post your opinions here on this website, and I am here in this long ass comment, saying your views they have the right to say what they want even if it hurtful to someone else or another group, thats all part of the net neutrality. If you wanna bitch about a website that DOES damage and actually hurts people go look at the Westboro Baptist Church site or the PeTA site or some of the sites sponsored by the KKK trying to degrade and discredit black activists such as MLK Jr. If you take Uncyclopedia so seriously unplug your computer, load your shotgun, strap your favorite holy book to your head, and go hide in the corner. If you can't distinguish between a joke site or a site with false information and a real site with real information like a .gov or another law or governmental site then you shouldn't be on the computer, let alone driving or voting. So my question to you is, how did this hurt you? And is it making such a big impact on our judicial system in the U.S. that people that should be behind bars for rape are walking away free of charge because someone on the jury went to Uncyclopedia looked up rape and is going off that definition? or do I just have too much faith in people's intelligence?

ReplyDeleteSo, let me get this straight...you thought that following your cretinous classmate's stupid saying down the internet phrasehole to its silly source and found, much to your surprise, shame and also surprise but for a second time (which itself was a surprise), that the page your cretinous classmate got it from was no more mature than he or she was?
ReplyDelete...
If I told you the stove was hot, would you touch it?
...
You know, I had a friend who said that lemons were sour. I don't need to tell you how surprised I was, after biting in to one at a later time and different place, at the flavour of lemons. (Spoiler Alert: It turns out that they're sour)
Oh my god...its so crazy that they would do this. They shouldn't be allowed to parody things like that. Some people might read that and think it is serious or it may encourage people to rape people. Is there an organization I can go to so that I can complain about these people. I don't think anyone reads them anyways, but they should be stopped. I am so angry. What can we do? Can we try to tell them that rape is not funny? Can we try to tell them that when you make fun of rape, it is like you are raping the internet? Anyone?
ReplyDeleteFirst, I didn't see any evidence to refute the claims made by Uncyclopedia (that women need rape to stay healthy and happy, etc. etc.) there is humor present in Uncyclopedia, but it is in no way intended to deviate from the truth. Everything on Uncyclopedia is true and cited with credible sources ( http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Uncyclopedia:Accuracy ) I have even used their information on my dissertation so it's legit.
ReplyDeleteAnd look, I am a well-educated and attractive guy. Both my mother and wife have been raped several times, and I asked their opinions on this article and they said "Haha that's funny" so it MUST be okay!
To Anyonymous: This website and its content makes me sick to the core. They should be raped and maybe then they will understand that it is not funny to be raped. It actually hurts. A lot. :(
ReplyDeleteSatire is the highest form of comedy. In a nutshell, its intent is to expose the idiotic. It does this in many ways. The article at hand is great - read it with the understanding that the author is a brilliant satirist and someone who disdains violence and stupidity in all its forms. This is called ad absurdum. Only a complete social degenerate could possibly truly think the way this "unreliable narrator" thinks, and possibly not even that. But this position is essentially the position of anyone who would blame a woman for her own rape. It exposes the idiocy of such a position. I hate to play the "you just didn't get it" card, but you just didn't get it.
ReplyDeleteThomas is 99.7% right, but its ok "P" cuz we all misinterpret things sometimes (just take a look at those crazy Christians!) I think your misunderstanding of the article stems from some deep laden insecurity that Uncyclopedia is funnier than you and uhh yeah I can't really remember where I was goin with that so I guess I'm just gonna compare you to Hitler
ReplyDeleteYour blog talks about rape more than Uncyc does. Who's in bad taste nowwwww beeeyotch?!
ReplyDeleteDemonstrating my point, the sentence about the percentage of rapes that go unreported (the absurd percentage being consistent with the ad absurdum conceit) is a great example. This is where satire shines - when truth pokes through the moronic extreme. I hope that the members of this blog see the sincerity of disgust for the perpetrators of sexual violence present in this comic text. If not - if I simply can't convince you of the good faith of great satire, then keep blowing your "unacceptable" whistle and I'm sure clueless numbskulls will come running and save you.
ReplyDeleteTo Nathan: Because wishing rape upon someone else just because you don't agree with them is a good way to help your cause..... Just Saying.
ReplyDeleteTo Uncyclopedia user #628.5: What's the matter? You can laugh at rape but you can't take it? ("it" being rape)
ReplyDeleteTo Nathan: Did you even read my first post?.... I am not the one who is having the issue with the article on Uncyclopedia, you are. I am just saying that if you wish to take rape so seriously and you understand the consequences and ramifications of it then you out of anybody here would not be wishing it upon someone. But I guess I can't blame you, when people don't know what to say they start to get violent. Rape is a very serious crime and I am not going around wishing it upon people whom I do not know on the internet just because I don't agree with their taste in humor or taste of websites. I am sure you go to websites that I would find dangerous, stupid, or downright offensive I stay off them, and when I talk to someone who likes that and has a different view I am not wishing them harm in any way shape or form. This is the main difference between you and me, I am not wishing anything ill to happen to you where you are wishing bodily harm upon others because they have an opposing view other than you. Learn to use your head to think, and never react emotionally.
ReplyDeletePeople, please! Can we at least agree that Uncyclopedia is the Worst? Ignore it. Uncyclopedians thrive on the controversy. They're like Madonna, but obese and hairy and sweaty and covered in a thick layer of Cheetos dust and failure.
ReplyDeleteAnd also you don't seem to get satire, no matter how clumsily and amateurishly it's presented. There. I said it. Uncyclopedia is clumsy and amateurish.
Also, awesome.
Btw, even I have spoofed a Nazi propaganda film on this site by staying as true to the Nazi frame of mind as possible. Of course, since there are ALWAYS people with impressionable minds that would take my script to be an undeniable holy edict, I am therefore a vicious anti-Semite. Hit me, Jewish bloggers!
ReplyDeleteHahaha lol.
ReplyDeleteOh my god this is still so crazy. I see so many sights on the internet making fun of rape. We have to do something. They are RAPING THE INTERNET every moment their pages are online. The are violating the very fabric and innocence of the world wide we. We have to stop this rape. The internet cannot protect itself, we have to do something about it. Lets make a website: Concerned citizens for the prevention of rape against the internet. Who is with me?
ReplyDeleteFabric and innocence of the World Wide Web? Boy are you NAIVE!!!!
ReplyDeleteScofield, I don't know who you think you are, but I am not naive. I know people like you. I bet you are probably one of them, one of those internet rapers, who likes to pray on the openness and fragility of the internet and I bet you rape it every chance you get. I started up my group: Concerned citizens for the prevention of rape against the internet, and I already have one other member. Together we are going to take down people like you who think raping the internet is funny. Because it is not. There is nothing funny about internet rape. IT IS NOT FUNNY! So don't laugh Scofield, BECAUSE RAPING THE INTERNET IS NOT FUNNY!
ReplyDeleteSure I am! And all those people who peddle porn on the net and openly abuse women in forums are COMPLETELY INNOCENT, aye? Maybe people like you fail to see the difference between humor (questionable taste, though it may have) and genuine hatefulness and insensitivity. Keep making a mountain out of a molehill, and you'll forget where the true lowlives lay.
ReplyDelete(Different anonymous here)
ReplyDeleteScofield, you didn't get it.
Go read that again.
Going around making fun of a devastating act that has affected the lives of so many people is completely inappropriate. News flash - rape is a serious crime, and any attempt to satirize or mock such a practice takes us a step backward in our goal of eliminating this problem. In order to end rape, these kinds of posts cannot be tolerated, as they only affirm the belief that rape is something to be poked fun at. The source of the post is irrelevant - the fact alone that it exists is problematic. I commend the author for speaking up.
ReplyDeletelol wow what is wrong with you people? The article mostly makes fun of stereotypes and myths about rape...you should embrace it for this, but instead you just see the word "rape" on a comedy site and don't care at all for context. The stupidity on this blog is baffling.
